PROVIDENCE, RI – Woonsocket schools have resolved a dispute with their busing company and averted a suspension of school bus services. The district has agreed to pay all outstanding bills to the bus company by the end of next week. Woonsocket schools chief Giovonna Donoyan says the district is now working on a plan to close a $3 million deficit... but she doesn't see many options for cutting costs.
"I've asked all of my directors to take a look at all programs and take a look at the efficiency of all programs," Giovonna says. "We need to tighten our belt, I realize that, but we certainly need to provide the supports and the services to our children."
Woonsocket will present a deficit reduction plan to state officials next week. City and school leaders are hoping to avoid state intervention in Woonsocket finances.
