Work begins at affordable housing complex

Providence, RI – Construction of the Kingstown Crossing I development is underway after Monday's groundbreaking at a former Navy housing complex in North Kingstown.

The first phase will provide 58 environmentally friendly units of affordable housing.

There's a huge need for affordable housing across the state, says Richard Godfrey, executive director of Rhode Island Housing.

"Even at a time when property values are going down in Rhode Island, we're seeing rents go up and the number of vacancies decrease. We're also seeing many more people turning to homelessness because they can't afford the apartments," says Godfrey.

Phase one should be open to residents by spring, he says. Once completely built out, there will be a little more than a hundred units with playgrounds, a daycare center and community space.
