Young Volunteers Could Loom Large in the Expected Taveras-Raimondo Primary in 2014
The sophisticated grassroots campaign in support of same-sex marriage offers a tangible reminder of the value of field work makes in Rhode Island politics. So as we move closer to an expected Democratic gubernatorial clash between Angel Taveras and Gina Raimondo next year, keep an eye on their level of outreach to young political activists. We're talking the impassioned young people who perform the humble, yet significant voluntary work of door-kn0cking, phone-banking, and seeking victory through thousands of small steps.
Back in 2011, Raimondo staged a young professionals' event at the Hot Club where the host committee included the likes of Chris Blazejewski, Julian Dash, Amy Gabarra, Meghan Grady, Nick Hemond, Brian Hull, Arianne Lynch, Andrea Iannazzi, James Diossa, Jeff Grybowski, Ed Pacheco, Sabina Matos, and Ryan Pearson, among others.
The treasurer also staged a $25-per-person football-watch event last December at Rick's Roadhouse, in what seemed like an attempt to broaden her following.
Moving into the present, Taveras is ramping up his own outreach to young professionals, with an event this (Thursday) evening, 5-7 pm at the Wild Colonial (suggested donations, $40 to $500).
Here's a rundown on the voluminous host committee:
Andy Andujar; Councilman Dino Autiello; Peter Baptista; Jose F. Batista; Sarah Beron; Jake Bissaillon; Representative Chris Blazejewski; Jonathan Boucher; Jennifer Bramley; LeeAnn Byrne; John L Calcagni III, Esq.; School Committeewoman Sandra Cano; Amanda Clarke; Blake Collins; Former Senator Daniel Connors; Councilman Steven Corrales; Patrick Croke; Peter Cuddy; Jeffrey Dana, Esq.; Suzanne Da Silva; Julian Dash; Doris De Los Santos; Robin Dionne; Mayor James Diossa; Thomas J. DiSanto; Ammala Douangsavanh; Brad Dufault; Nora Farrell; Christopher Fierro; William J. Fischer; Kristina Fox; Chris Gilchrist; Joshua Giraldo; Senator Gayle Goldin; Lisette Gomes, Esq.; Stephanie Gonzalez; Sonia Grace; Teny Gross; Nicholas Hemond, Esq.; Brian Hull; Christopher Hunter; Melissa Husband; Steve Iannazzi; Jenna Karlin; Alex Karoff Hunger; John Lane; Christopher Lanen; Ivette Luna; Seth Magaziner; Erik Manchester; Christopher Marsella; Brenna McCabe; Jeffrey Mega, Esq.; Daniel & Emily Meyer; Laura Moore; Russell Moore; Domingo Morel; Christina Morra; Lauren Nocera; Craig O'Connor; Edwin R. Pacheco; Nina Pande; Senator Ryan W. Pearson; Phanida Phivilay; Senator Juan Pichardo; Leo and Nicole Pollock; Jeffrey Quinlan; Clay Rockefeller; Estela Rodriguez; Michael Ryan, Jr.; Councilman David Salvatore; Carol Santos; Senator Adam J. Satchell; Asher Schofield; David Segal; Derek Silva; Representative Scott Slater; Brett Smiley; Christine Spaziano; Jennifer Neil Spaziano; Clifford Wood; Councilman Seth Yurdin, Michael Zabelin, Esq.
Taveras and Raimondo have gone step to step in hiring experienced campaign managers. They're busy building their war chests. Yet a distinct advantage may go to the Democrat who excels in energizing, inspiring, and hanging onto a corps of young activists.
