In May, the FCC approved the transfer of the license of 89.3 FM from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to Rhode Island Public Radio, Incorporated. WUMD, the student station operated by the University, continues its full schedule of programming online at www.WUMD.rocks.
Currently 89.3FM’s transmission originates from the small broadcast tower on the University’s campus in North Dartmouth. Our plans are to move the transmission location, slightly to the southwest, and 850 feet above ground off the Citadel Communications tower in Tiverton, Rhode Island. This will result in improved in-car and in-home reception for the major population centers in Rhode Island and the adjacent communities of the South Coast of Massachusetts.
Naturally, such a move is a large project and will take several months to complete. We hope by Fall or early Winter, 89.3 FM will provide significant reception improvement for those listeners who may have found 88.1 FM spotty at times.
Because we have a lease agreement with Wheeler School, owner of 88.1 FM and Coventry Public Schools, owner of 91.5 FM, we will continue to simulcast on those frequencies for the duration of our agreements. And of course, South County listeners will still hear RIPR on 102.7 FM.
We’ll let you know when transmission of 89.3 FM has been transferred from North Dartmouth to the Tiverton tower. If you experience reception issues or have reception questions or comments in the meanwhile, please let us know.
