City and Town Clerks Prepare For Same-Sex Marriage

State registrars prepare to issue licenses to same-sex couples August 1st.

Same sex marriage becomes the law of the state today Thursday.  City and town clerks are well trained in the new law but don’t have any idea what kind of volume they’ll be dealing with.

State registrar Colleen Fontana has been working overtime instructing city and town clerks in the new law guaranteeing marriage rights to same sex couples. The new forms – giving couples the option of calling themselves ‘bride,’ ‘groom,’ or ‘spouse’ are printed. Now it’s just a waiting game to see how many people show up to apply today.   Fontana said there’s just no way of knowing.

RI Couple Anticipates Marriage

This promises to be a pivotal week in the long-fought battle for same sex marriage in Rhode Island.  The House is expected to tweak the bill approved last week by the state Senate and send it off to Governor Lincoln Chafee for his signature. 

Aaron Coutu works not one but two library jobs. But Sunday, his mind was not exclusively on books. Coutu, who with his partner, Ray Daignault, became the first Rhode Island couple to engage in a civil union two years ago, now plan to get married once it becomes legal to do so August 1st.

Paiva Weed commits to committee vote on same-sex marriage; referendum amendments expected

Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed says there will be a vote on same-sex marriage in the Senate Judiciary Committee this year.

In an interview in her office this afternoon, she said:

Certainly, it will be an issue that will be before the Senate this year .... There will be a vote in Judiciary on the issue.”
