Three Top Questions as the RI Senate Is on the Cusp of Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Tuesday was a remarkable day in Rhode Island politics. First, the five-member GOP contingent in the 38-member state Senate -- including the chamber's low-key minority leader, Dennis Algiere -- offered its unified support for same-sex marriage. Then, and much more significantly, Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio found himself on the wrong side of a key vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Rhode Island is now on the cusp of legalizing same-sex marriage.

Bill Would Outlaw Debarking and Declawing of Pets

Senator Dominick J. Ruggerio, a Democrat from Providence,  has introduced legislation that will prohibit landlords from requiring pet owners to declaw and devocalize their cats and dogs. 

Both procedures require invasive surgery, and, in the case of devocalization, are potentially life-threatening, according to the Coalition to Protect and Rescue of Pets.

If passed, property owners would still retain the right to bar pets from their buildings.

Similar legislation was passed in California last year.

Paiva Weed says the Senate will try to reverse poor rankings of RI's business climate

As high unemployment continues to plague Rhode Island, Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed says her chamber will focus in the 2013 session on economic development and trying to turn around the state's troubled economy.
