A former State police detective returns to the witness stand this morning in the murder and racketeering trial of James Whitey Bulger.

The government's first witness is retired detective Lieutenant Robert Long.

He led an investigation in the late 1980's that went nowhere after Bulger apparently learned authorities had bugged the garage where he and his associates did business.

So far, Long has only told jurors how the investigation began and identified photographs of people he said met with Bulger at that Garage near north station.
