Hop On Your Bike For National Bike To Work Day

Providence is among the cities that will observe National Bike to Work Day Friday.  A gathering at Burnside Park 8:00am Friday will include members of the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition and will also include Mayor Angel Taveras.  The event is to show how biking is a healthy commute to work, said Matt Moritz the president of the Rhode Island Biking Coalition.

Taveras, Providence win big national contest for $5 million innovation grant

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has some great news to announce today: Providence city government has won a $5million grant from the Bloomberg  Philanthropies for a program known as the `Mayors Challenge.’

Taveras has won some love from the New York Times for the grant that is administered by the foundation established by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, which oversaw the contest.

The Times says that four other cities, Houston, Chicago, Santa Monica, California and Philadelphia, were finalists. More than 300 cities competed for the innovation grant.

Not bad for a small state

The neighborhood we call Rhode Island was clobbered by the giant n’oreaster that began as flurries Friday morning and cascaded into a blizzard with echoes of 1978, leaving our corner of  New England buried under two feet or more of fluffy, plump white drifts.

The storm mixed menace, beauty, inconvenience and biting chill. Thousands of us shivered through Friday and Saturday night in houses bereft of electricity as gusts whipped, thermostats plunged and down parkas were our pajamas. .

Mike Solomon Fund-Raiser: Setting stage for mayoral run?

The votes have barely been counted from the Nov. 6th election. But the pols aren’t taking any time off  from their planning and fund-raising for the 2014 election cycle. Case in point: The December 10, 2012 fund-raising time Providence City Council President Michael Solomon is holding at the Roger Williams Park Casino.  Democrat Solomon, who is a likely candidate for mayor if Mayor Angel Taveras decides to run for governor, is asking for donations of $50, $100 or $250 to his Friends of Michael Solomon committee.
