Long Overdue Remembrance of WWII Soldier this Memorial Day

In cities and towns throughout Rhode Island Monday, people gathered at parades and solemn ceremonies to mark Memorial Day – the day set aside to honor soldiers, sailors and airmen who have died in the line of duty.  At the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Warwick the day was dedicated to a single serviceman whose sacrifice was overlooked for decades.

The Ocean State Salutes Its Veterans

Hundreds of people were present for the state's 2013 observance of Memorial Day, at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

The first two days of the Memorial Day weekend were a washout – but the same decided to shine on Rhode Island Monday, just in time for cities and towns to hold their Memorial Day parades.

The main event was at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter,where the state’s top leaders gathered to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

RI Officials Remember Fallen Heroes

State officials gathered this morning to remember Rhode Islanders who made the ultimate sacrifice.  The Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in the Garden of Heroes, outside of the state capitol building.  Gov. Lincoln Chafee, joined other officials to honor those who have fought for our country. 

“It’s a day of memory for those who died in great service for our nation, and mixed in with the fun of the barbeque, and the family events," said Chafee.  "I’m sure that everybody does pause at some time, to remember as they well should.”
