Court Battle Begins In Providence Between Two Historic Jewish Congregations

250 year-old Touro Synagogue, the oldest in America, is part of a court battle between two Jewish congregations.

After more three years, the fight over colonial silver bells, between two of the country’s oldest Jewish congregations is heading to court. The trial will take place at U.S. District court in Providence.

The fight began in 2012, after the congregation at Touro Synagogue in Newport, received a $7.4 million appraisal for a pair of ornate silver bells, dating back to colonial times. The ceremonial bells are part of the Torah housed in the 250 year-old synagogue.

Acela Route Through Rhode Island Hits the Brakes

Commuter rails will be running, but service will be delayed.

Travelers relying on the Amtrak Acela train from Boston and Providence to New York will need to find another way to travel today.

A power failure is to blame for the cancelation, which might not be fixed for several weeks.

A cable line failure outside of New York City halted commuter trains and Acela traffic during rush hour yesterday afternoon.

Now the Boston to New York Acela route has been canceled, and may not run for the foreseeable future.

The regular Amtrak northeast regional service, is also affected by the problem/
