Scores of Openings Remain in State Pre-K

The Rhode Island Department of Education is looking for more applicants for a lottery to fill state-funded pre-kindergarten programs. RIDE has extended the deadline for the lottery until August 22nd, as it looks to fill 234 seats in seven local cities.

State lawmakers increased funding this year for pre-kindergarten programs, which education advocates see as an important step toward improving public schools. The theory is that if more students are ready when they arrive in elementary school, then fewer students will fall behind at an early age.

Obama on preschool funding, career/technical education

President Barack Obama called for publicly funded preschool programs during his State of the Union address this week, saying early childhood education would help more children succeed in school. He also suggested that more high schools should offer technical degrees or certificates so that students can go immediately into the workplace when they graduate.

Three cheers for parenthood!

Some of you may know that I’ve been on maternity leave for the last three months, after the birth of my first child.

In fact, anyone listening to Rhode Island Public Radio on July 4th might have even heard a news item announcing the birth of Luna Charlotte Smick earlier that morning.
