Angel Taveras hires top Washington, D.C. firm to plan governor race

In another sign that Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is serious about running for governor in 2014: sources close to the mayor say he has hired a leading Washington, D.C.-based political consulting firm and top Rhode Island campaign strategist J.B. Poersch, a longtime aide to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.

Taveras has retained SKDKnickerbocker as his campaign consultants. Poersch and veteran consultant Bill Knapp will lead the team advising Taveras as he plans his campaign.

Blow up the Superman Building?

In the best of all possible worlds, Providence's iconic Superman Building would be revived as housing that would add downtown residents and reduce the amount of prime office space. Yet Providence Mayor Angel Taveras isn't ruling out the possibility that the structure might have to be leveled.

Providence Wins $5M Bloomberg Prize to Close the Word Gap

Providence wins $5 million prize from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras says it’s a dream that the city won a $5 million prize to help low-income children boost language skills. The prize money came from a philanthropic organization set up by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Providence won with a program that will equip low-income children with devices that record conversations and count the words they are exposed to. The children’s parents will then be coached on ways to expose kids to more words. The goal is to close what’s known as “the word gap,” between low-income and more affluent four-year-olds.

Providence and Unions Reach Pension Agreement

A Superior Court judge has approved pension settlement in Providence with retirees and current workers.  Judge Sarah Taft-Carter is expected to finalize the agreement next month.

The Providence pension settlement includes freezing cost of living adjustments, scaling back future benefits and moving retirees over to Medicare.

In her decision, Taft-Carter calls the settlement fair, reasonable, and adequate. Providence Mayor Angel Taveras calls the approval a significant step to finalizing the city’s pension agreement.

EMILY's List Prez says Raimondo "Is Going to Jump In and Run"

While state Treasurer Gina Raimondo remains publicly undecided on a run for governor next year, the president of a top national fundraising organization for women candidates has no doubts.

"Gina Raimondo is going to jump in and run," Stephanie Schriock, the president of EMILY's List, tells Hotline on Call, a DC publication.

Field for Mayor of Providence in 2014 starting to take shape

Educator Victor Capellan, a veteran of Latino politics in Rhode Island, says he plans to run for mayor of Providence in 2014 if Angel Taveras seeks a different office.

Taveras, like state Treasurer Gina Raimondo, is widely expected to run for governor. Independent Governor Lincoln Chafee plans to seek re-election; the only other declared candidate at this point is former state auditor Ernest Almonte, a Democrat.
