Brown Poll: Providence Voters Bullish on Taveras, Less So on the Economy

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras continues to enjoy strong support from Providence voters, but most of them also consider city's economy to be rough shape, according to a new Brown University poll.

The poll shows that 59 percent of respondents think Taveras is doing a good or excellent job, down from 60 percent last year. About 40 percent don't think Taveras is doing a good job.

Clay Pell Files Notice of Organization to Run for Governor

In a definitive sign that he's jumping into the race for governor, Clay Pell has filed a notice of organization with the state Board of Elections that he's moving ahead with a campaign.

In a statement, Pell says, “Earlier today, I filed a Notice of Organization for an Exploratory Committee with the Board of Elections. The filing is a practical step in my process to decide whether I will seek the Democratic nomination for governor."

Raimondo Adds Former Cicilline Campaign Manager Eric Hyers to Her Team

State Treasurer Gina Raimondo is adding Eric Hyers, who managed David Cicilline's two successful congressional campaigns, to her stable of political talent as she gears up for a Democratic run for governor next year.

In a telephone interview, Hyers would say only that his role is to "get her and her team ready as we approach the end of the year." He declined comment on other questions, including whether he'll remain part of Raimondo's team through 2014.

Andrew Annaldo to Leave Providence Board of Licenses

Andrew Annaldo, the longtime chairman of the powerful Providence Board of Licenses and a top Rhode Island political insider, plans to leave the board after it came under sharp criticism from city officials for its handling of the latest case involving an underage stripper at Cheaters Gentleman's Club.

In a telephone interview, Annaldo says the criticism of the board was "not at all" a factor for why he asked Providence Mayor Angel Taveras not to re-appoint him when his current term expires in January.

New Policy Would Crack Down On Prostitution In Providence

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras' wants to implement a one strike policy closing strip clubs that have a single instance of prostitution.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras wants to use a one-strike policy to close strip clubs that permit a single instance of prostitution or hiring underage strippers.  This comes after police found that a 14-year-old girl working at Cheaters was soliciting for sex at the club.

Taveras’ spokesman, David Ortiz, says the mayor was disappointed by how the Providence Board of Licenses recently fined Cheaters 5000 dollars and suspended its license for 45 days. Ortiz said Taveras supports using any permissible legal means to keep Cheaters closed.

New Plan Proposes Extensive Additions To City's Bikeways

Providence rolled out a new bike plan for the capital city.

Bike Providence is an extensive, proposed plan to create safer, more accessible bike routes throughout the city. Providence already has some bike lanes, and shared roads for cyclists; and so much of the new plan proposes connecting them to create a more cohesive system.
