Former President Bill Clinton came to Rhode Island Wednesday to lend his support to an old family friend, Seth Magaziner, one of two Democrats vying to be the state's next treasurer. More than 200 people turned out for the fundraiser ($50 suggested contribution) at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

In December, 1991 Bill Clinton swooped into Providence for a University Club fund-raiser for his nascent presidential campaign. He arrived at Green Airport in a small  private plane and was met by former Providence Mayor Joseph Paolino, Suzanne Magaziner and her young son.

As Clinton got off the plane, he reached out and patted the young boy on the head. ``Hey Seth, how areyah?, said the Arkansas governor in the drawl that would become known around the world after his 1992 election as president.

Nuala Pell, widow of revered Sen. Claiborne Pell, confidante of Pastores, Kennedys and European royalty, a force in Rhode Island politics for decades and a woman who was as at ease at a Democratic Party rally at a Portuguese Club as she was with the well-born swells of Newport society at Bailey’s Beach, died early this morning at Newport Hospital. She was 89.

The Pell family has announced a memorial service to be held Monday, April 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, at 11 a.m.

As we previously reported, former president Bill Clinton will headline a New York City fundraiser Tuesday evening for Seth Magaziner, one of three Democrats running to be Rhode Island's next general treasurer.
