Jorge Elorza, a professor at Roger Williams University Law School, is gearing up to run for mayor of Providence if Angel Taveras seeks another office.

"If Angel decides to run for governor, I will run for mayor," Elorza said Wednesday, in his first interview on the subject.

Brett Smiley, chairman of the Providence Water Supply Board and Democratic political consultant, said today that he is forming a Smiley for Mayor Committee to explore a run for Providence mayor in 2014 if Mayor Angel Taveras decides to run for governor, as many top Democrats expect.

Fundraising specialist and lobbyist Brett Smiley is joining those looking at a run for mayor of Providence if Angel Taveras moves on next year.

"I am seriously exploring a race for mayor in 2014," Smiley tells RIPR. He says he has started meeting with people to talk about a possible run and plans to make a decision this summer about whether to move forward.
