Care New England, one of the largest hospital chains in Rhode Island, is announcing a series of layoffs as it continues to deal with ongoing financial problems. Layoffs will affect “clinical and non-clinical, union and non-union” workers, officials said in a statement.

Life’s trajectory is hard to forecast and, you may have noticed, often harder to control.  There’s that profound Yiddish proverb, “Der mentsh trakht un got lakht. Man plans and God laughs.”  Under the best of circumstances, we figure out a way to cope with the curve balls that life sometimes throws at us.  And some of us do so with remarkable aplomb and grit, which is what we hear from Neil Corkery.

Neil Corkery, a North Kingstown resident, has had a rich career as an educator, human service administrator, and Rhode Island state legislator.

With the state’s medical landscape in flux, more hospital workers are joining unions. The latest example is Butler Hospital in Providence, where an overwhelming majority of employees from three units voted to join Service Employees International Union’s Local 1199 on a 59-6 tally in a union election.

The new union units include Patient Assessment Service, Intake Coordinators, Clinical Access Specialists and unit secretaries.
