Welcome back to my Friday column. The news keeps coming fast and furious, from near and far, although the local pace is bound to include just a few more leisure moments with the approach of summer. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Angel Taveras uses his first television commercial to emphasize family, his own humble beginnings and how hard work and sacrifice can lead to shared improvements.


As expected, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo is launching the television advertising portion of her deep-pocketed campaign by starting with a personal focus -- in this case, her father, Joseph, who died at age 87 earlier this month.

This new spot from David Cicilline’s re-election campaign characterizes as old news attacks from the NRCC about the Democrat’s past criminal-defense work.

Doherty’s camp, meanwhile, is offering this message to supporters:

On the same day that the National Republican Congressional Committee put out another attack ad targeting long-ago criminal-defense work by David Cicilline, Brendan Doherty’s campaign offers an upbeat spot with the candidate and his wife.

A law firm representing House Speaker Gordon Fox’s re-election campaign has written to WPRO general manager Barbara Haynes, asking that the radio station stop playing a “Fox in the Henhouse” mystery ad whose sponsor remains unknown.

A group calling itself Concerned Rhode Islanders Against Gordon Fox is using a radio commercial to urge voters not to support Fox in the November 6 election.

UPDATE: WPRO tells RIPR the ad was placed by an agency from Woodbridge, Connecticut. The contact for the agency, Harvey Adelberg, didn’t return a call seeking comment; he is a URI grad and formerly worked for WPRO.

A new spot by David Cicilline hits back against a recent attack by the National Republican Congressional Committee and similar messages from Brendan Doherty’s campaign, like this:

Meanwhile, Doherty and Cicilline will square off at 7 tonight in a one-hour debate cosponsored by ABC6, RI Public Radio and the League of Women Voters. It will be simulcast on RIPR.

Second District Democratic Congressman Jim Langevin is up with his first TV commercial against Republican challanger Michael Riley. It uses Riley’s self-description as a Wall Street-type and links him with Mitt Romney.

Campaign watchers have long anticipated a spot criticizing Congressman David Cicilline’s 2010 evaluation of Providence’s supposedly “excellent” fiscal condition. Republican challenger Brendan Doherty has now launched such a commercial, entitled “Cover Up.”

Via news release, the Doherty campaign says:

A new commercial by Congressman David Cicilline’s campaign continues the Democrat’s theme of linking his Republican opponent, in his own words, with other members of the GOP (Mitt Romney in this case).

According to Cicilline’s campaign:

Michael Riley, the GOP candidate in the Second Congressional District, isn’t wasting time in going after Democrat Jim Langevin. Riley’s campaign says it has launched a six-figure buy on TV and radio, including the TV commercial above.
