A new piece of classical music gets its American premiere Friday at the Rhode Island Philharmonic pops concert in Roger Williams Park. Composer Paul Desenne wrote the piece as a new take on a traditional Viennese polka.

Larry Rachleff joined the Rhode Island Philharmonic as conductor in 1995. He was one of just a few finalists out of hundreds of applicants. Now, after more than two decades Rachleff is leaving his post, a rare move in the world of classical music, where conductor positions are coveted.

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra played a pops concert at Providence's Roger Williams Park on Thursday night, in a return of sorts for the orchestra. The philharmonic's last concert in the park dated to more than a decade ago, in 2004.
