Taveras Reports $500K+ for Q1; Raimondo Brings in $1.1M+

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Angel Taveras recorded his best fundraising performance yet by collecting more than $500,000 in the first quarter of 2014, although rival Democrat Gina Raimondo bested that by taking in more than $1.1 million, their campaigns said Thursday.

Taveras' communications director, Dawn Bergantino, said more than three-quarters of Taveras' take for the quarter "came from within Rhode Island."

Pell Unveils Jobs Plan; Says His Ideas Will Elevate His Campaign

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Clay Pell unveiled Wednesday his plan for improving Rhode Island’s economy, as part of the first in what he said will be a series of forthcoming policy initiatives.

In broad strokes, Pell said if elected governor he would focus on improving the state's public schools, strengthening infrastructure, and leveraging Rhode Island's assets.

Nuala Pell, widow of revered Sen. Claiborne Pell, confidante of Pastores, Kennedys and European royalty, a force in Rhode Island politics for decades and a woman who was as at ease at a Democratic Party rally at a Portuguese Club as she was with the well-born swells of Newport society at Bailey’s Beach, died early this morning at Newport Hospital. She was 89.

The Pell family has announced a memorial service to be held Monday, April 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, at 11 a.m.

Brown Poll Shows Raimondo and Taveras Locked In A Virtual Tie

The race to pick Rhode Island's next governor is still up for grabs.

A new Brown University poll shows Democratic gubernatorial candidates Angel Taveras and Gina Raimondo locked in a virtual dead heat, with Clay Pell lagging behind in the race. The poll (albeit from a tiny sample size of 86 somewhat or very likely GOP voters) shows a similar scenario with Republicans Ken Block and Allan Fung.

Republican Party Wants Pension Dispute Settled In Court

The Rhode Island Republican Party is backing up the GOP’s two gubernatorial candidates in saying that the state pension dispute should be resolved in court.  Two of the state’s leading Democrats still support the push for a settlement between the two sides

A proposed pension settlement unveiled in February was cast in doubt Monday when one of six groups that have to offer initial approval rejected the deal. State GOP chairman Mark Smiley said he agrees with his party’s gubernatorial candidates that the pension conflict should be decided in court.

The Democratic candidates for governor are slated to discuss a series of economic issues during a forum this evening in Warwick. The event comes with just about five months until the September 9th primary election.

Giroux Kicks Off Campaign For Governor

Todd Giroux officially announced Tuesday that he’s running for governor. Giroux declared he’d run as a democrat back in October.

Giroux is a 43-year-old Woonsocket native. He’s a general contractor who specializes in historic preservation. He ran for governor in 2010 as an independent.

Giroux said he’ll be a governor who listens and responds. “We need a governor that has a steady hand on the rudder of this state,” he said. “And if we provide a commerce fund, an infrastructure fund then we have the tools that support the jobs plan.”

As Expected, Pell Gets National Education Association Rhode Island endorsement

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Clay Pell has won the endorsement of the political action committee of the National Education Association Rhode Island, whose leadership has enthusiastically supported Pell's campaign.

In a statement, NEARI president Larry Purtill says, “This race for governor is critical to the state of Rhode Island and public education. We need a candidate who will listen to educators, stop the testing craze and make sure that every Rhode Island student has the opportunity for a great public school education."
