Dividers Installed Along Pell Bridge In Newport

Dividers down the center of the Pell Bridge in Newport should all be installed by the end of the week.

Road crews have begun installing hundreds of dividers down the center of the Pell Bridge in Newport. About five hundred three-foot yellow posts will stretch the two mile span.

Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority Director David Darlington said the dividers will not keep people from crossing into oncoming traffic, but should help keep those accidents from occurring in the first place.

RI Turnpike & Bridge Authority: Flexible Dividers To Be Placed Down Center of Pell Bridge

Calls for a median along the Pell Bridge have grown louder since a deadly head-on collision on Christmas Eve.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority says it will install a divider down the center of the Pell Bridge.

However, the divider will not be a solid median.  The authority says it will install roughly five hundred reflective yellow posts each about four feet tall along the center of the bridge.

Turnpike and Bridge Authority director David Darlington, said the posts will go up in the next two weeks.

Bills On The Way To Collect Sakonnet River Bridge Toll

A legislative commission put a 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge as a placeholder as it works out a plan for the controversial toll.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority is ramping up efforts to collect the 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge. Chairman David Darlington said there are 750,000 records of drivers who have crossed the bridge without being charged. Now the authority is ready to collect.

If you have an E-ZPass, it will be charged. If you don’t own an E-ZPass and have crossed the Sakonnet Bridge fewer than 25 times, you will not receive a bill. But after you make that 25th trip, the authority will send out a bill of at least $2.50.
