Moderate Ken Block Jumps To The Republican Pary

The founder of the Moderate Party of Rhode Island is scrapping that effort to instead run for governor as a Republican. Ken Block got six and a half percent of the vote as a Moderate candidate for governor in 2010.

When he established the Moderate Party in 2008, Block called it a pragmatic and centrist way to improve Rhode Island politics. But Block says he’s realized that third parties aren’t an effective way to make change.

Potential Providence Mayoral Candidates Ramping up Fundraising

Two of the Democrats running for mayor of Providence next year are stepping up their campaign fundraising.

Roger Williams University Law School professor Jorge Elorza said he hopes to collect 30-thousand dollars by the end of the third fundraising quarter September 30th. Elorza said he hopes to collect 30-thousand to 40-thousand a month until the September 2014 primary.

Providence’s current mayor, Angel Taveras, is expected to run for governor next year.

Providence Bishop Announces Republican Party Affiliation

Bishop Thomas Tobin has been an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage, and has now announced he is a registered Republican.

The Bishop of Providence, Thomas Tobin, said he has become a registered Republican.

Tobin told a group of Rhode Island Young Republicans he blamed himself and the Catholic Church for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

He also said Catholic lawmakers at the State house quote “let us down.”

The Dioceses of Providence wrote a "Letter to Catholics on the Approval of Same-Sex Marriage" which was published in the newspaper, Rhode Island Catholic Newspaper following the passage in May.

Chafee using new Democratic label to raise campaign cash

Gov. Lincoln Chafee is busy embracing his new party. The RI governor was in Massachusetts with President Barack Obama on the campaign circuit to boost the Senate candidacy of U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, D_Mass.

Newly minted Democrat Chafee is also ramping up his fundraising for a 2014 reelection bid. The governor has scheduled a fundraising event for Tuesday, June 25th at the University Club on Benefit Street in Providence. It is a two-tier fundraiser with suggested contributions of  $500 and $1,000.
