Leo Skenyon to become Speaker Mattiello chief of staff

UPDATE: Skenyon began working in Mattiello's office today, according to House spokesman Larry Berman.

With rumors dancing through the Statehouse corridors of power, new House Speaker Nick Mattiello, D-Cranston has yet to reveal his leadership team. Which isn’t unusual, considering he wasn’t formally elected speaker until about an hour ago.

New Poll shows RI voters favor legal pot

In the run up to a Super Bowl between two teams from states that have legalized marijuana, thus giving whole new meaning to the term Bud Bowl, pollsters are taking the pulse of public opinion on  the issue in other states.

Today, Public Policy Polling released a public opinion survey that shows 53 percent of Rhode Island voters support changing the state’s laws to sell, regulate and tax pot in a manner similar to alcohol.

Bill would Add Two Student Seats to Rhode Island Board of Education

Legislation sponsored by Providence Rep Edith Ajello, would add two student positions to the newly formed Rhode Island Board of Education.

One seat would represent public high schools—the other seat, public colleges.

The two students would not be given a vote, but would be able to voice their opinions, providing insight to the board says Ajello.

Should Students Serve on RI Board of Education?

The House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare will consider adding two students to the State Board of Education at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The bill, sponsored by Providence Democrat Edith Ajello, proposes two additional seats on the board, one for a college student and one for a high school student. Both positions would be non-voting, but the students would have their opinions recorded in official minutes from any meeting.
