Rick Pitino, the celebrated college basketball coach who led the Providence College Friars to the team’s last Final Four appearance in 1987, was fired as coach of the University of Louisville after an FBI investigation into a scandal surrounding the team.

College football has gone wacky. Why else would Northern Illinois have played at Toledo on Tuesday night and Ohio University have traveled to Bowling Green on Wednesday night? College football on a Tuesday night the first week in November? College football on a Wednesday night? I’m kidding, right? Sadly, no.

Rhode Island’s modern political history is filled with bitter Democratic primaries for governor. But RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay  says this campaign season it is the Republicans who are bashing each other.

Rhode Island voters have not elected a Democratic governor since 1992, when Bruce Sundlun decisively beat Republican Betty Leonard. There are many factors contributing to this Democratic Statehouse futility.

As Rhode Island works to recover some of its investment in failed video game company 38 Studios, the company’s famous founder is now battling cancer.

Curt Schilling made the announcement in a statement released through ESPN.  The former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox did not indicate what type of cancer, nor whether he is likely to recover.

Schilling faces a lawsuit from Rhode Island’s economic development agency, claiming he and others at 38 Studios failed to fully inform the state of the financial precariousness of the company.
