At a time when unemployment, and economic development, remain at the forefront of many people’s minds, columnist Bob Kerr reflects on a once thriving local industry.

Mills, producing products like silver and textiles once kept Rhode Island and Massachusetts cities like Woonsocket, Providence and Fall River, bustling hubs of economic activity.

Kerr reflects on the loss of that industry, and the legacy it’s left behind.

The Newport Fire Marshall begins an investigation into the fire that destroyed a historic mansion on Bellevue Avenue. No one was reported injured in the blaze, which began Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out at the historic Stonor Lodge, a 9,000 square foot historic building, in the midst of a renovation.

Newport Fire Captain Phil Oliveira says the blaze had completely engulfed the building the time crews arrived on scene.

A spokeswoman for Memorial Hospital said that three first responders were treated there for heat exhaustion after battling a five-alarm fire at a chemical company in Central Falls. Dyana Koelsch said none of those first responders had been admitted to the hospital.

Temperatures crested 90 degrees today, adding to dangerous conditions for firefighters and rescue workers.

The fire started today in an old mill building, most likely during a mixing process that involved toxic chemicals.
