The Department of Labor and Training says it saw an increase this year (2013) in the number of prosecutions for fraudulent claims and will continue programs next year that crack down on fraud.

Cranston Estate Planner Sentenced Six Years For Fraud Scheme

Cranston estate planner Joseph Caramadre has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role as architect of an investment scheme that exploited the terminally ill.  Once he gets out of prison he’ll have to put in 3,000 hours of community service.

East Providence Man Pleads to Unemployment Insurance Fraud

An East Providence man has pleaded no contest to unemployment insurance fraud.  Forty-nine-year-old Richard Daigle was sentenced to ten years probation and ordered to pay restitution to the state in excess of $10,000.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said if the case had gone to trial, prosecutors would have proven that for a six-month period starting in 2010 Daigle was working at a Stop N Shop store but failed to advise the state Department of Labor and Training of his earnings.

Medicaid Report Finds Some Fraud; Bigger Problem is Data Sharing

Governor Lincoln Chafee has released a new report on Medicaid fraud. Lawmakers and citizen groups had been pressuring Chafee to make the report public.

And, after declining for fear of jeopardizing fraud investigations, Chafee finally released the report, along with several proposed anti-fraud bills and a timeline of his administration’s efforts over the past few years to crack down on corruption.
