Lawmakers Consider Tying University Funding To Perfomance

State colleges and universities, like Rhode Island College could see their funding cut, if it's linked to student performance.

College professors are raising concerns about a plan to tie state funding for higher education with performance. The proposal calls for targets in areas like graduation rates and degrees in high demand fields. Schools would have to meet the targets to qualify for part of their state funding starting after 2016.

Community College of Rhode Island English Professor Anthony Amore says students and faculty need to play a role in setting the performance measures.

Brown Task Force Offers Recomendations On Handling Sexual Assaults

A Brown task force is offering their recommendations on how the school should handle sexual assaults.

A Brown task force on sexual assault has completed its recommendations for the university. They’re aimed at improving the way the university responds to complaints of sexual violence.

The task force urges Brown to adopt a single policy on sexual assault, dating violence, harassment and stalking. The group says the university should centralize the process for handling complaints in a single office.

RISD Technicians Strike Over Labor Contract Dispute

Picket lines will be visible outside the Rhode Island School of Design Thursday because of a labor dispute with some workers. The Technicians Union represents 44 employees, responsible for many of RISD’s famous studios. 

From glass to ceramics and metalworking, Union President Tucker Houlihan said they’re crucial to a RISD education.

Roger Williams University Students Take Up Cause Of Chinese Dissident

 A group of undergraduates at Roger Williams University have taken up the cause of an imprisoned Chinese dissident. And in the process they formed a special bond with his college-aged daughter. Rhode Island Public Radio education reporter Elisabeth Harrison reports the group was recently reunited at the Roger Williams campus in Bristol.

A small group of students sits on low couches in the library at Roger Williams University, just before lunchtime. One of them is a petite 20-year-old from China, with long, black hair and round cheeks. Her name is Jewher Ilham.

Brown University Student Dead In Apparent Suicide

A Brown physics PhD candidate died after an apparent suicide Tuesday.

A Brown University graduate student is dead after an apparent suicide.

South Korean Hyoun Ju Sohn was a first year doctoral student in the Brown Physics Program.  Sohn fell or leapt from the university’s science library Tuesday.  The multi-story building sits in the heart of the school’s Providence campus. Police responded to the scene a little after noon.
