Wrong-way Detection Systems Going Up Along RI Highways

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said a growing number of deadly wrong-way accidents has prompted it to invest in an alert system that should be up and running by the end of the summer

With one death already this year, and three last year RIDOT said deadly accidents caused by wrong-way drivers are growing not just in Rhode Island but around the country. So it's installing 20 detection systems that will first alert a driver through signs that they are going the wrong way, and after that the system alerts other drivers and police.

Newly Rebuilt Pawtucket River Bridge Re-dedicated

The newly rebuilt Pawtucket River Bridge was re-dedicated Thursday.

The nearly 600-foot span connects Massachusetts and Rhode Island via Interstate 95.  The original span, built in 1958, had become so rundown the bridge had to be closed to multi axle trucks.  

Truckers who used the bridge risked a three thousand dollar ticket. Governor Lincoln Chafee remembered those truckers in his prepared remarks.

Sea Life and Waves Roll Along I-95 Underpass in Providence

A mural commissioned to mark Rhode Island Hospital’s 150th anniversary was unveiled Tuesday morning in Providence.

Dolphins, whales, harbor seals and an octopus mingle among the blue and violet waves that roll down the walls of the Eddy Street underpass. Artist Kenn Speiser says the waves are meant to have a calming effect on drivers as they buzz by.

Speiser and his team painted during the day for about three weeks, getting plenty of feedback along the way.

Viaduct Replacement Project in Providence Set to Begin

Dignitaries including Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the state’s congressional delegation will gather in Providence Monday for groundbreaking on the new Viaduct south replacement project. The viaduct is a nearly 1,300 foot bridge that carries Interstate 95 through downtown Providence.

The Providence viaduct, built nearly 50 years ago, is showing its age.   Wooden boards line the underside of the deck to keep crumbling concrete from falling on cars below. And weight limits would have to be next, said state Transportation Department director Michael Lewis.

Commuters who use Route 114 may notice some new information as of Wednesday.  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has put up an electronic message board on Route 114 North in East Providence.  The sign provides travel time estimates to both I-95 and T. F. Green Airport.
