RISD Names Interim President

The Rhode Island School of Design has announced that Provost Rosanne Somerson will take over the duties of president while the board seeks a replacement for John Maeda.

Last Wednesday, Maeda announced that he will step down at the end of the semester to take a job at the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

RISD Board Chair Michael Spalter says he is confident that Somerson is the right person to lead RISD through the transition.

Outgoing Rhode Island School of Design President John Maeda addressed RISD's faculty on Wednesday, the day he released a surprise announcement that he is stepping down at the end of the semester. Many RISD professors expressed profound shock at the news, although Maeda was not popular with some professors.

Faculty from the Rhode Island School of Design say they’re not surprised that President John Maeda is stepping down, but they were surprised by the timing of his announcement.

Maeda, in a YouTube video, announced Wednesday that he is leaving at the end of the semester, for a job at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers.

RISD President Maeda Leaving For Job In Silicon Valley

RISD President John Maeda is leaving the school after six years for a job in Silicon Valley.

Rhode Island School of Design president John Maeda announced Wednesday that he is leaving the school for a job in Silicon Valley.

In a released statement, Maeda said he’s leaving RISD to take a job as a design partner with the top-tier venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. Maeda leaves campus at the end of this semester, starting his new job next month. Maeda calls the move quote, “an irresistible pathway to strengthen design’s place in the digital age.”

RISD replaces board chair

The Rhode Island School of Design has a new leader for its governing board. The art school has elected Michael Spalter, a businessman with a vast personal collection of digital ar, to chair its board of trustees.

Spalter replaces outgoing RISD Board Chair Merrill Sherman, who will stay on as a member of the board for three years. Sherman led the search for the school’s current president, John Maeda, who has proved unpopular with many faculty.

Spalter is married to the artist Anne Spalter, who has a studio in Pawtucket. She’s a graduate of both RISD and Brown University.
