The Rhode Island state police have nabbed Providence State Rep. Almeida for allegedly misappropriating about $6,000 in campaign money for personal use.

State Representative Joseph Almeida is maintaining his innocence after State Police charged him with unlawfully appropriating more than $1500. He’s accused of using more than $6000 in campaign contributions for his personal use. Meanwhile, watchdogs say there’s room for improvement when it comes to how the state polices the money collected by politicians.

Almeida: I Maintain My Innocence

State Representative Joseph Almeida put out a brief statement Wednesday in response to charges he illegally pocketed campaign funds for personal use.

The Providence democrat maintained his innocence, indicating he has no intention of stepping down from his house seat.

"As I move forward, my focus will be on representing the hard-working people of my district." Almeida said. "I respect the legal process and I maintain my innocence as this matter is adjudicated in court."

State Representative Almeida Arrested; Accused of Misappropriating Campaign Funds

Rhode Island State Police on Tuesday arrested state Representative Joseph S. Almeida (D-Providence), the deputy majority whip in the House, alleging that he misappropriated $6,122 in campaign contributions for personal use.

In a statement, State Police said Almeida, 57, was charged with one count of unlawful appropriation over $1,500.
