Women & Infants Labor Dispute Over Definition Of "Delivery"

A labor dispute at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence has erupted over the layoff of 16 staff members. The layoffs, and the dispute, turn on the definition of a single word: deliveries.

Members of the Service Employees International Union local 1199 are picketing outside Women and Infants over the hospital’s decision to cut several cleaning, lab, and clinical staff. Union spokesman Patrick Quinn says his members dispute the hospital’s claim that the number of deliveries – and therefore the need for as many staff – has dropped below 8500 over the past year.

Hasbro to cut 10% of workforce, consolidate facilities

Pawtucket-based toy maker Hasbro says it will lay off about 10 percent of its workforce and consolidate some facilities to offset lower than expected revenue growth.

ProJo set to move ahead with layoffs in November

Providence Journal managers have closed the door on cost-saving talks with the Providence Newspaper Guild and plan to move ahead with layoffs in the first week of November, according to Guild president John Hill.

Hill says a ”very bad” October revenue report made management unwilling to offer a guarantee of no layoffs in 2013. Management plans to eliminate enough positions to cut spending by $1.2 million.
