Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan to Speak at Roger Williams Law School Forum

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan heads to Rhode Island later this month to help mark the 350th anniversary of the state’s Colonial Charter.

Kagan is scheduled to speak at a forum in Providence sponsored by Roger Williams University, as part of a year-long series of events celebrating the historic significance of the 1663 charter.

House Oversight Committee Set To Examine Investment in 38 Studios

The House Oversight Committee with convene to examine the state's failed investment in 38 Studios.

The House Oversight Committee is set Wednesday to examine the state’s losing investment in failed video game maker 38 Studios.

The General Assembly ended the legislative session last month. But members of the House Oversight Committee are returning to Smith Hill  to examine Rhode Island’s misadventure with 38 Studios.

The discussion will focus on documents obtained from the state Economic Development Corporation about the EDC’s approval of bonds for 38 Studios. The video game company was lured here with a $75 million  state-backed guaranteed loan in 2010.

Robitaille Taking Another Look at the 2014 Governor's Race

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate John Robitaille says he’s taking another look at running in the race next year.

Robitaille had ruled out a second campaign for governor back in December.

But Robitaille said he’s reconsidering that decision now that Governor Lincoln Chafee has joined the Democratic Party and Moderate candidate Ken Block is considering running as a Republican.

Mediation Continues in Unions' Legal Challenge to 2011 Pension Overhaul

Mediation will continue in the high-stakes legal challenge by a series of public-employee unions to the overhaul of the state pension system that became law in 2011.

Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter is scheduled to get the next update in the case on September 5, according to court spokesman Craig Berke. The hearing will take place in Kent County, since Taft-Carter is being assigned there this fall.

Governor’s Office Wants To Hear From Rhode Islanders

Gov. Lincoln Chafee will host public forums to hear from residents; he is expected to face a tough reelection in 2014.

The governor’s office is asking you, the public, about what it’s like to live and work in the Ocean State. Residents are being asked to speak their minds at a series of public forums this week.

The forums are part of an initiative out of the governor’s office called RhodeMap RI. It’s a project analyzing the state’s business climate and economic competitiveness. The goal is to travel across the state, listen to residents about what it’s like to get job, buy a home and get an education in the state, then use that feedback to develop policy.

Raimondo Finishes Quarter With $2M In Political War Chest

Gina Raimondo finds herself with over $2 million in political funds, but has yet to announce whether she will run for Governor in 2014.

Thanks to contributions during the quarter that ended June 30th, state Treasurer Gina Raimondo has a campaign war chest of more than 2 million dollars.  Raimondo is among three Democrats expected to run for governor next year.

Raimondo continued her pacesetting fundraising by collecting just under 400-thousand dollars during the most recent quarter. Her 2 million dollar-plus war chest is thought to be a Rhode Island record for a candidate yet to announce a gubernatorial campaign.

Gov. Chafee: Same-Sex Marriage Will Create Jobs

A supporter of same-sex marriage, Chafee has maintained that it will be good for Rhode Island's economy.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee said Thursday will be a happy day in Rhode Island, now that the state’s same-sex marriage law is in effect. The governor has pushed for bringing same-sex marriage to the state since taking office. He said it will help create jobs.

“I do believe that young, creative people that want to come and do business, you just want to have a welcome mat out. I do believe it’s very, very important to growing the economy in Rhode Island," said Chafee.

After 36 Years, Rhode Island Couple Can Now Tie The Knot

Larry Bacon and Dave Burnett, in their Newport home, met in Maine over 36 years ago. They plan to get married in September.

The General Assembly legalized same-sex marriage this past May, and when Gov. Chafee signed the legislation into law Rhode Island became the twelfth state in the country to do so. 

Today the state will begin to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

One of those couples planning to get married now that it is legal is Larry Bacon and Dave Burnett who have been together for 36 years.
