The YWCA Rhode Island will hold the group’s 6th annual Women Holding Office Celebration on Monday April 28 at 6 p.m. at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Rose Hidalgo, director of public policy for Casa de Esperanza in Washington, D.C. The annual event celebrates the achievements of women in Rhode Island politics. This year, the premiere of a documentary about the first women elected mayors in the Ocean State will be presented.
House Speaker Gordon Fox says he does not favor a General Assembly override of Governor Lincoln Chafee’s veto of legislation that would create an anti-abortion `Choose Life’ Rhode Island license plate that would serve as a fund-raising vehicle for an evangelical Christian anti-abortion group.
Fox’s comments came during an interview with Rhode Island Public Radio’s Political Roundtable panelists Scott MacKay, Flo Jonic and Maureen Moakley. Fox noted that he a long-time supporter of abortion rights who did not vote for the `Choose Life' plate when it was approved in the House.
(PROVIDENCE, RI) A group of URI students is spending their winter vacation in the Dominican Republic studying politics and health care. The trip is part of a semester long class on political and social change in the Caribbean.
