Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has frozen the commercial tax rate in Rhode Island’s largest city. But the cost of the tax is still seen as an obstacle to new development.

City Council President Michael Solomon says city officials are limited in their ability to improve the situation beyond trying to encourage a broader tax base.

Solomon, Capellan up with Campaign Web Sites for 2014

Two of the candidates hoping to succeed Angel Taveras as mayor of Providence have posted Web sites to offer visibility, attract supporters, and raise money.

Council President Michael Solomon's site is called Mike for Providence.

Capellan, an educator in Central Falls and veteran of Providence politics, is a bit more oblique with his eponymous site (although not so much with a background shot of the Providence skyline, including the now-vacant Superman Building).

Council President Mike Solomon serious about mayoral run

If Providence City Council President Mike Solomon doesn’t win an expected Democratic primary for mayor in 2014, it won’t be for lack of trying.

Solomon has worked in synch with Mayor Angel Taveras, who is widely expected to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.  Solomon, has arguably been the most effective council president since Elmwood's Nick Easton, who held the post under Mayor Joseph R. Paolino Jr., in the mid-1980s.
