Field for Mayor of Providence in 2014 starting to take shape

Educator Victor Capellan, a veteran of Latino politics in Rhode Island, says he plans to run for mayor of Providence in 2014 if Angel Taveras seeks a different office.

Taveras, like state Treasurer Gina Raimondo, is widely expected to run for governor. Independent Governor Lincoln Chafee plans to seek re-election; the only other declared candidate at this point is former state auditor Ernest Almonte, a Democrat.

Providence inducts two new members into the MLK Jr. Hall of Fame

Providence Mayor Angel Tavares, and City Council President, Michael Solomon have inducted two new members into the city’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Hall of Fame. The awards ceremony honored two Providence men for their contributions.

John “Johnny” Britto and Dr. Wayne Montague, Sr. were selected as this year’s inductees from a list of nominees submitted by the Providence Human Relations Commission.

Solomon’s war chest towers over council colleagues ahead of big Monday fundraiser

As he prepares for a possible mayoral run in 2014, Providence City Council President Michael Solomon has a big fundraising edge over his 14 council colleagues.

Solomon’s war chest was reported at almost $114,000 in a third quarter filing with the state Board of Elections — up from $84,923 at the end of Q1.

Mike Solomon Fund-Raiser: Setting stage for mayoral run?

The votes have barely been counted from the Nov. 6th election. But the pols aren’t taking any time off  from their planning and fund-raising for the 2014 election cycle. Case in point: The December 10, 2012 fund-raising time Providence City Council President Michael Solomon is holding at the Roger Williams Park Casino.  Democrat Solomon, who is a likely candidate for mayor if Mayor Angel Taveras decides to run for governor, is asking for donations of $50, $100 or $250 to his Friends of Michael Solomon committee.
