More than 30 governors from across the US are gathering in Providence for the summer meeting of the National Governors Association. An epidemic of opioid abuse in the states is one of the top problems facing the elected officials.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to address the nation’s governors in Providence during the 109th summer meeting of the National Governors Association, which runs from July 13th to 15th.

With Memorial Day over, the summer tourism season is now underway. Industry experts have high hopes for the coming months. According the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, about 40 percent of all tourist spending in the state happens between June and August.

Governor Gina Raimondo flies to Des Moines, Iowa Friday for the annual summer meeting of the National Governors Association. The meeting is a chance for governors from around the country to discuss and compare policy.

Governor Gina Raimondo is in Washington D.C. this weekend. She’s participating in the annual gathering of the National Governors Association.

Raimondo will rub elbows with the leaders of other states around the country and take part in several panels and discussions, including a meeting of the Economic Development and Commerce committee, of which she is a member. She’s also scheduled meet with President Barack Obama along with the country’s other Democratic governors

The National Governors Association’s annual summer meeting will be held in Rhode Island in 2017, the NGA announced Monday.

"We’re excited to bring the nation’s governors to Rhode Island, and we thank Gov. Gina Raimondo for her invitation,’’ said Gov. Terry McAuliffe, vice-chair of the NGA.
