What Ever Happened To Gun Control In Rhode Island?

Despite calls for more gun control, little has happened in the last year in the Ocean State.

In the aftermath of last year’s Newtown school shootings, Rhode Island politicians leaped on the gun control bandwagon. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay wonders what’s happened since.

After last December’s horrific school massacre in Connecticut, political leaders from the White House to the Rhode Island State House vowed to crack down on gun violence. Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, House Speaker Gordon Fox and Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed all advocated measures to advance gun control in our state.

NRA lobbyist comes to RI

The debate over how to respond to gun-related violence is heating up at the Statehouse. A lobbyist for the National Rifle Association is slated to brief state reps Wednesday.

NRA lobbyist Darin Goens will offer a briefing at the request of Woonsocket Representative Lisa Baldelli Hunt. The discussion comes as the Assembly is expected to consider a series of gun-related bills later this session.

Cicilline lashes out against NRA ad

(PROVIDENCE, RI) Congressman David Cicilline is lashing out at the National Rifle Association for an ad it unveiled this week critical of the protection afforded the President’s two daughters.  In a letter to supporters, Cicilline calls it a “new low” and says petty personal attacks have no place in the public debate on gun violence prevention. “The NRA doesn’t want to have a serious discussion on gun violence,” Cicilline says,  adding  “they just want to drag things into the gutter.”
