By the end of the summer, Newport will no longer have a slot parlor. Casino owner Twin River said it plans to close Newport Grand at the end of August.

The license for casino gaming will then transfer to Twin River’s new casino in Tiverton, set to open in September. The Tiverton Casino Hotel will feature 32 table games, up to 1,000 slot machines, and the 84-room hotel will have meeting space and a fitness center.

Newport Grand was once home to a Jai-Lai fronton, but for decades housed only slot machines. A proposal for a full casino with table games, like poker, was shot down by Newport residents in 2014.

A sale to  Carpionato Group, the Cranston real estate developer, is scheduled to close August 28th. The Group purchased the Newport Grand property from Twin River in early May for $10.15 million.

Carpionato has yet to announce plans for the Newport Grand property.
