Newport’s zoning board of review approved a welcome center at the city’s historic Breakers Mansion Monday night.  Groups have been squabbling over the center for over a year.

At issue is a 3600 square-foot visitors’ center that will house snacks, ticketing and information.  The problem is its potential placement on the front lawn of the gilded age mansion. A local neighborhood association fighting it said the center would degrade the site’s historic nature.  The Preservation Society of Newport County, which operates the mansion, said it needs the upgraded facility.

In Newport, a visitor center proposed at the Breakers Mansion passed a major hurdle last night.

The hotly contested center is still far from a reality.

The Preservation Society of Newport County which owns the Breakers Mansion wants to build a visitor center, which would house bathrooms, information, and food on the mansion’s property.

They say it’s needed to support the approximately four-hundred thousand annual visitors.

The Society applied for approval of the project from the city’s historic district commission, but was denied.
