Sen. Claiborne Pell represented Rhode Island for 36 years in the United States Senate. Few senators have ever better served a state.

Nuala Pell, Spouse And Political Partner Of Sen. Claiborne Pell, Dies

Nuala Pell, widow of revered Sen. Claiborne Pell, confidante of Pastores, Kennedys and European royalty, a force in Rhode Island politics for decades and a woman who was as at ease at a Democratic Party rally at a Portuguese Club as she was with the well-born swells of Newport society at Bailey’s Beach, died early this morning at Newport Hospital. She was 89.

The Pell family has announced a memorial service to be held Monday, April 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, at 11 a.m.

November 22, 1963 started out as an ordinary day at the Providence Evening Bulletin. By 12:30, city editor Jim Wyman was ready for lunch and headed across the street to the Providence Journal diner. He had just settled into his favorite stool when the phone on the counter jangled to life.

“It was the managing editor seeking me and urging me to get back across the street because the president had been shot,” Wyman explains.

Veep to Visit Salve Regina

Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend a reception at Salve Regina University in Newport next month, according to the Associated Press.

The event at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will recognize Nuala Pell, wife of the late Senator Claiborne Pell, for her work in philanthropy, education and public service.
