As summer fades to fall, the Red Sox – Boston and Pawtucket – and the Patriots dominate the sports news. Here is my take on three hot topics.

RED SOX: SNAP OUT OF IT!

The Rhode Island Senate Finance Committee has scheduled a series of hearings on the proposal for a new Pawtucket Red Sox stadium, Sen. William Conley, D-East Providence, said Monday.

The sun is out, baseball bats are cracking, and Rhode Island is embroiled in another ballpark saga that appears headed to extra innings. In this game, Raimondo is going to have to come out of the bullpen with a strong closing performance, or a new field for the Pawtucket Red Sox isn’t likely.

As winter fades, New England’s summer passion returns. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay takes a break from politics to usher in the baseball season at Fenway Park and McCoy Stadium.

Chris Marrero, the Pawtucket Red Sox star, has been named to the 2016 post-season International League All-Star Team, the team announced today.

Marrero, 28, is leading the team in almost every offensive category and is among the league leaders as well. In 124 games this season, he is hitting .287 with 23 home runs and 69 Runs Batted In. He leads the International League with 234 total bases and is first in extra base hits with 52, and has a .501 slugging percentage, second in the league.

UPDATE: Tonight's PawSox Opener has been postponed due to rain.  The home-opener is now scheduled for Friday at 6:15pm.

Thursday is opening day for the Pawtucket Red Sox. The game comes after a tumultuous year for the PawSox. A new ownership team announced plans to move the team to Providence, but the architect of the deal died unexpectedly, the public rebelled, and the plan had to be scrapped.

Rhode Island Public Radio’s Scott MacKay sat down with the PawSox new President Charles Steinberg to find out what’s next for the team.

Signs of spring are hard to find in Rhode Island. But Red Sox fans caught a glimpse of baseball season Wednesday.

The Red Sox spring training truck made a stop in Pawtucket before hitting the road to Ft. Meyers Florida. So-called “Truck Day” has become a tradition at Fenway, but this is the first time the truck has also stopped at McCoy Stadium, home to the Red Sox AAA team, the Pawtucket Red Sox.

PawSox spokesperson Bill Wanless called it a unique opportunity for local baseball fans.

Deflated footballs proved more newsworthy than a Super Bowl trophy, NCAA hockey championship hardware and the bill of sale for a beloved minor-league baseball franchise this year. Eleven months after the New England Patriots used underinflated footballs in the first half of the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, Deflategate drags on. That’s why it is without question THE sports story of 2015 in Rhode Island and the rest of New England.

Once again, an independent agency has questioned Providence city government’s financial direction. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay wonders why Mayor Jorge Elorza and the city council aren’t taking this more seriously.

Following the announcement that the Pawtucket Red Sox would not pursue a new stadium on a parcel of downtown Providence land, Pawtucket’s mayor Donald Grebien joins our Political Roundtable. He talks about sagging numbers at McCoy Stadium, economic development in the city, and the Pope’s U.S. visit.
