Brown University and a California for-profit hospital chain announced Thursday plans to make a rival bid for Rhode Island’s second-largest health system, Care New England.

The Ivy League university’s partnership with Prospect Medical Holdings comes as Care New England is negotiating a sale to the Boston-based Partners HealthCare.  

RI AG Approves CharterCare/Prospect Deal

Rhode Island’s Attorney General has approved the affiliation of the nonprofit CharterCare Health system and the California-based for-profit Prospect Medical Holdings. CharterCare operates Roger Williams, St. Joseph’s, and Our Lady of Fatima hospitals.

Tonight, the public will have the chance to comment on the proposed sale of CharterCare Health Partners – which owns Our Lady of Fatima and Roger Williams hospitals – to California-based Prospect Medical Holdings. But the process hasn’t been without some bumps in the road.
