Supreme Court Justice Pulls Back the Curtain on How the Court Works

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan visits Rhode Island and spills some secrets about how the court works.

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan offered rare behind-the-court insights Tuesday at a forum celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Rhode Island royal charter.

It’s hard to manage getting by these days without using email, but the Supreme Court of the United States does just fine without it, said Justice Elena Kagan. Speaking to about 500 people at Trinity Repertory Theatre, Kagan said they type everything on paper and have couriers deliver it.

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan to Speak at Roger Williams Law School Forum

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan heads to Rhode Island later this month to help mark the 350th anniversary of the state’s Colonial Charter.

Kagan is scheduled to speak at a forum in Providence sponsored by Roger Williams University, as part of a year-long series of events celebrating the historic significance of the 1663 charter.

RWU Bringing Nonprofit HousingWorks RI into the Fold

Roger Williams University is bringing HousingWorks RI into its fold. HousingWorks is a local nonprofit that studies affordable housing and economic development.

Associate Vice President for University Relations, Pete Wilbur, said HousingWorks RI already operates out of the university’s facility in Providence, and faculty members are on the board. He said making the nonprofit part of the university gives students hands on opportunities.

A Recent College Grad Strikes Out on Her Own

Recent college graduates face a still-sluggish job market and student loan burdens that are higher than ever, but none of that fazed new Roger Williams University graduate Abby Moreau. Tuition at Rhode Island's Private Colleges Among the Nation's Most Expensive

Brown University's tuition ranks amongst the top 5% most expensive in the country.

Private colleges in Rhode Island have some of the highest prices in the country, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education.

Bryant University, Providence College, Roger Williams University and the Rhode Island School of Design also ranked in the top 5 percent, when tuition prices were adjusted to reflect the average cost for students after grants and scholarships.

RISD ranked near the top of that list with a price tag of nearly $35,000. The national average was just $19,300.

Attorney for Accused WikiLeaks Army Soldier has ties to RI

A lawyer with ties to Rhode Island is defending Bradley Manning, the Army private who’s on trial for what has been described as the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.  

Attorney David Coombs is representing the soldier, who prosecutors say aided the enemy, which carries a potential life sentence.

Coombs worked as a substitute professor at Roger Williams Law School in 2010. He has a practice in Fall River, where he specializes in court martial cases.

RWU kicks off 350th RI Colonial Charter Celebration

Roger Williams University kicks off the state celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Rhode Island Colonial Charter tomorrow with a panel discussion about the 1663 charter on campus.

Five members of Governor Lincoln Chafee’s Rhode Island 1663 Charter Commission will bring their perspectives to a discussion of the landmark document and how the ideas of Roger Williams influenced American constitutional development and indeed, resonate to the 21st century.

Who Will Address RI Graduates?

Commencement speakers for 2013 are a mixed bunch.  At New England Institute of Technology, quarterback turned sports analyst Terry Bradshaw will give the commencement speech on May 5th. The school is also honoring Taco, Inc. CEO John Hazen White, Jr. with an honorary doctor of humane letters, citing his leadership in the business community and his company’s commitment to education for employees.
