Inspectors didn’t identify what chemical prompted an evacuation at the recycling facility of the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation. Earlier this week, the agency shut down its recycling facility, after workers reported smoke coming from the sorting line.

Gary Maddocks, chief of security at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, reported thirteen workers taken to the hospital for chemical exposures are all well. He said workers do their best to sort and remove anything that doesn’t belong in the recycling facility to prevent such incidents.

South Kingstown Ranked One Of Nation's Safest Towns

Feb 18, 2014

South Kingstown is the 27th safest community in the nation, according to data from the national organization Neighborhood Scout.

It reports the total number of violent and property crimes per 1,000 residents in towns of 25,000 residents or more. Despite being the state's largest town and the home of the University of Rhode Island, South Kingstown was the only Rhode Island town ranked in the top 100. South Kingstown Police Chief Vincent Vespia said the town's high ranking is due to more than just the police.
