Experts are predicting an unusually bad allergy season with high levels of pollen this year. They note that the cold and wet spring has delayed the onset of pollen production and will cause many types of plants to produce allergens at once. Professor Keith Killingbeck of The University of Rhode Island said he was surprised by the intensity of the allergen levels.

Rhode Islanders may have had to dig those winter coats back out this morning.

After a warm weekend, with highs in the sixties, residents woke up to sleet, and icy windshields.

The National Weather Service reports that temperatures dropped into the low thirties overnight, with just under a half inch of precipitation measured at T.F. Green Airport.

And though the skies have cleared up temperatures are expected to hover in the forties Wednesday, with lows in the twenties.  Only slightly warmer weather is predicted for the rest of the week.

RI Could Get Less Snow Than Expected

The National Weather Service has reported that this week's upcoming snowstorm will be less intense than originally expected, with the state receiving just 1 to 3 inches Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

National Weather Service spokesman Bill Simpson says that although there have been more storms than usual this winter, the amount of snow is not out of the ordinary.

"It's not that unusual. It's not record-breaking snow, it's not record-breaking cold, but it has been pretty persistent. It's lasting into the first week of spring and maybe almost into early April."

After a relatively warm weekend, with highs in the upper fifties on Saturday, Rhode Island is now being struck by below-freezing temperatures.  And now snow is on the way.

The National Weather Service is watching a storm that’s expected to hit the North East on Tuesday night, lasting into Wednesday.  Newport and Aquidneck Island are expected to get the brunt of it, with four to six inches of snow. A winter storm advisory has already been issued for the area. The rest of the state will see between two and four inches.

Protecting the Eastern Bluebird in RI

As spring arrives in the Ocean State it’s important to monitor your bird houses.

The Eastern bluebird, a native to southern New England, has been on the steady decline since the late 1800’s.  This is in part due to the introduction of the House Sparrow from Europe.

Rhode Islanders can help the Bluebird population by staying vigilant, says Linton Harrington, of the non-profit environmental group the Trustees of Reservations.
