Taylor Swift

Celebrity magazines are reporting that Pop Star Taylor Swift is in Rhode Island, where she plans to host a barbeque for the 4th of July.

Scottish musician Calvin Harris posted a photo of Swift on Instagram at what looks like her Watch Hill Mansion. Swift can be seen grilling vegetables on a flagstone deck with the ocean in the background.

US Weekly reports that Swift hosted a 4th of July party last year at her multi-million dollar home in Westerly. This year the magazine reports her preparations include a large slide, and several deliveries.

Rhode Island’s General Assembly and Gov. Gina Raimondo have reached agreement on her first state budget. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay on what the new budget will do and what it lacks.

The $8.7 billion state budget for the financial year that begins three days before the Bristol 4th of July parade  seems greased for approval at the Statehouse. As is usually the case, this spending and taxing plan contains elements Rhode Islanders should cheer yet   fails to address some of our little state’s crying needs.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello wants to eliminate the "Taylor Swift tax"  -- Governor Gina Raimondo's proposed statewide property tax on vacation homes worth more than $1 million.

"I'm hoping that the revenues are there to eliminate that," Mattiello said during a taping Thursday of Rhode Island Public Radio's Political Roundtable. "You could look to see that eliminated. I agree with the public sentiment that you don't open the door to a new tax, because it's just going to expand in the future, so that's something that I'm really looking to eliminate."

Gov. Gina Raimondo has proposed her first state budget. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay looks at the politics of our new governor’s taxing and spending plan.

It’s difficult to argue with the rhetoric behind our new governor’s $8.6 billion budget plan. In her televised address from the Statehouse last Thursday evening, Raimondo outlined her goals in a convincing fashion, hitting all the high notes.  Her smorgasbord of ideas provides a little something for everyone.

Governor Lincoln Chafee has delivered his final state budget proposal and given his final State of the State speech. RIPR political analyst Scott MacKay parses Chafee’s Last Hurrah.

The cliché says: show me your budget and I’ll figure out your priorities. When it comes to Gov. Chafee’s final budget, that may be a trite description, but it’s true.
