Match Day Sees More Primary Care Residencies

Match Day was Friday for fourth year medical students around the country. It's an annual rite, the moment when students find out whether and where they'll be doing their residency. It's a big deal because where you do your residency matters on so many levels - from the number of years you'll spend there, to the quality of the doctors who train you, to the opportunities you'll have to deepen your specialty. And many residents end up staying where they train.

Local Cardiologist Calls Trans Fat Ban "Overdue"

Miriam Hospital cardiologist and Brown medical school professor Dr. Barbara Roberts said the Food and Drug Administration’s proposal to ban trans fats in processed foods is long overdue. Trans fats, or partially hydrogenated oils, are added to foods like cookies, ready-to-use frostings, and microwave popcorn to extend their shelf life. Scientists have known for decades that they can lead to hardened arteries and higher bad cholesterol.

Brown Med Student Finds Most Hikers to Be Unprepared

An overwhelming majority of hikers head out into the woods unprepared, according to new research done by a Brown University medical student. Older hikers tend to be better prepared than their younger counterparts, but both groups fall short on necessities.

Brown Medical School Dean Steps Down

Ed Wing is stepping down as Dean.

Ed Wing, Dean of Medicine and Biology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, will be stepping down at the end of this academic year. He’ll return to Brown after a sabbatical to continue teaching, researching, and writing. Meanwhile, the university will launch a national search for his replacement.
